A: Open source.
Before I go any further, I would like to clarify the two terms - knowledge and education.
Knowledge is the fact or condition of knowing something with familiarity gained through experience, association, acquaintance with or understanding of (e.g. science, art, technique etc.)
While education is the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process.
See the difference? Education can be only obtained via the governmentally approved educational institutions - schools, colleges, universities etc. On the other hand, knowledge can be obtained, mainly by eagerness to learn. The two main assets one needs in order to obtain knowledge is to be able to read and process information. Education is paid - knowledge is free. Take advantage.
While education worldwide is crying for improvement, knowledge hasn't really changed - you want to know it, you find a way to learn it. An example of which, is my all-time favorite author/cognitive scientist/linguist/political activist - Noam Chomsky. He holds BA, MA and Ph.D. in philosophy and linguistics, but his professional life extends far beyond this. A critically acclaimed academic and worldwide respected political analyst, he is comfortable talking about economics, psychology, political science etc. His in-depth familiarity with these is not due to university education, but due to his acquired background knowledge. And this is what he does - he reads. A lot. Six newspapers a day, about 80 journals all together. Books, analysis etc.
Putting aside ones educational ambitions, acquiring a background in-dept knowledge in a specific field of study is not as hard as it may seem. Especially nowadays, where technology is an outstanding alternative - there isn't much, which cannot be accessed through the Internet. These days, more and more educational institutions are going open source, which gives people around the world, access to lectures and notes from one of the most elite universities.
Such example is MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Their open course ware gives access to countless lectures and pdf files with notes from almost any discipline - from aeronautics and astronautics to linguistics and philosophy.
Try to complain about lack of knowledge now.
